dear future me

You are probably wondering why I will bother writing a letter to myself about one of my college classes. Well, I just wanted to tell you a story. The story of how I learned what ” my theory of writing” was and how this class helped me become more proficient in writing.
I took this course with four other writing courses this semester. I am predy sure you still remember because this was the first time I had to write a total of eleven essays, each being at least three pages or more. This is the first and last time I will do this to my self.
Despite the unprecedented amount of work- papers I had to write this semester, the writing process for these papers was not that difficult thanks to the things I learned in my English class. I don’t know why I decided to wait until my third year to take this course when it could have helped me a lot early on.
I never hear of the theory of writing before this class. But as the name implies, your theory of writing refers to the personal strategies and tricks you use to write anything from research papers to simple letters like this one.
I theory of writing is a simple one. Whenever I have a writing assignment, I simply take a piece of paper and write down anything I know about the topic. If I don’t know anything about the topic, I will do some research to learn more about the topic. And with the information, I will write my first draft. I will only start writing my final draft when I feel like I had enough information and patience with my first draft.

As you can see, I already had a habit of writing drafts even before I took this course. On the other hand, I did not know that it was ok for your first draft to be bad or different from the final draft. I always try to make my first draft as perfect as possible, so that I only had to do minor changes when typing it up on the computer. This class taught me that it was alright to have bad first drafts, you could always fix your mistake in your second, third draft is you wanted to do so.
Before this class, I never did peer review. This is actually the one thing that helped me the most in this class. When you write a paper, they are some mistake that you will never be able to see unless someone else points them out for you.
The only reason I go to the writing center is that I want them to fix the grammar errors in my papers. But since I took these courses, I started going there so I could get feet back from my second draft.
I use only to do one draft, but I figure I could not give them my first draft because it was terrible, so I did a second one to use as an example of my final draft for peer review.
This is to show how much I liked getting feet back on my writing. I always try to listen to the feedback I get and improve my essay accordingly. One example of this is sawed in my first English paper between the final draft and the first draft.

I received feedback that the introduction of my first draft was too descriptive of the surroundings and needed more information about the situation. The essay was about interviewing someone and talking about that person if you forgot. I took the critic into consideration and adjusted the introduction accordingly.

I know you enjoy writing. Still, I want you to remember that if you ever wonder why writing had become so more comfortable all of a sudden, is because you learned to do multiple drafts, you learned to use databases and get peer review all thanks to your English college class. So, you should give some credit to your professor for teaching you these things.
On this note, have a nice life sincerely,
my past self.
